Is it legal to do a cross-field kick off the tee from a penalty goal attempt?
I've seen a couple of situations where the attacking team point towards the posts and the defending team turn their backs and stop paying attention.
In situations like that, would it be legal to kick the ball out to the wing from the tee, and for the winger to chase it, gather it and score a try? (I'm assuming the winger would be behind the kicker at the time of the kick, and thus onside).
I know for a fact that, if the penalty attempt hits the posts, the attacking team can regather it and score, and I can't see why this option would be any different. Keen to hear from people who know the laws better than I do, on this matter
